One Dark Night is one those books that never fail to bring a smile to my face, no matter how many times I read it. Ms. Wheeler's descriptions emphasize the size differences between tiny Mole and Mouse to the giant Bear, while Mr. Bates beautiful watercolours add to the emotional element. As Mouse and Mole journey through the woods, suspense grows and little (big ones, too!) readers wonder what will happen. The surprise ending will leave youngsters laughing. A keeper for the entire family!

Fourteen thousand years ago
The north was mostly ice and snow
But wooly mammoths didn't care-
These beasts had comfy coats of hair.

With this simple rhyme, Wheeler introduces readers to the world of the wild, woolly mammoths. She covers their eating habits, migration and enemies and introduces aspects scientists hypothesize over. The rhyming lends a gentle cadence to the story heightening the gentleness of the illustrations. No garish, bright colors, but simple, quiet earth tones.

The perfect book for lover of mammoths, Mammoths on the Move is also a good introduction on the subject. It will certainly inspire children to learn more about these massive creatures.
