Tar, ruler of Zylan, has been looking for his lifemate for three Zylar cycles. When his high priest, Mica, tells Tar that his lifemate has been found, Tar eagerly anticipates what this may mean for his future, as a search for a life companion has been a long and difficult one. Also, a Zylan male never really experienced life without the connection of a life companion. Has the ideal companion for Tar been found?

Nyssa is reeling from the fact that after 13 years, she has been let go from her job. Exhausted about worrying about her future, and in the middle of a deep sleep, she experiences an odd dream with very pleasant sensations. When she awakens, the first thing she realizes is that her sensations are very highly tuned. Add to that, she finds very light chains hanging from different places in her body. Then she hears a voice that lets her know the chains, the links, are really there, and that she is not alone.

This begins the tumultuous relationship between Tar and Nyssa. Nyssa is now on the planet Zylar, and in the home of Tar. Much to her shock, Tar explains that Nyssa's body has accepted the Companion Links, which will bind them together as life companions. Tar further explains that now Nyssa is Zylan and she will begin developing various abilities. Nyssa isn't taking this lying down. She wants answers and she wants to go home. Nyssa very quickly learns what some of the Zylan abilities are and how the Companion Links work. She experiences a height of sexual fulfillment completely unimagined.

Through the next several days, Nyssa learns of a male-dominated culture, where females are there to sexually satisfy their mates. Nyssa is a spitfire, however, and even though she admits she craves Tar like none other, she will not be like all other Zylan women. She quickly learns to read Tar, and uses that to her advantage, thereby allowing her a measure of control so that she does not feel completely lost.

If anyone feels lost, it is Tar! Here his life companion is changing the rules. What is he going to do? Is he willing to give her up because she won't comply? Has Zylar reached a point in history where women will have more of an equal say in their relationships, and in life in general? Tar's frustrations were genuine. Not only is he a Zylan male, he is ruler! Why won't this earth woman, his little cat, comply? It was intriguing to read of a male whom we might find chauvinistic in our society, but who was acting completely within the norm in his world.

I found Zylan Captive to be filled with a unique brand of humor. Quite naturally, Nyssa is extremely unhappy being a captive. She misses her habits, her belongings and her home. However, she does begin to adapt, especially because she has her own way about doing things. I loved Nyssa's cynicism. At first she is determined that no man will own her, nor will she obey any man, yet she begins to miss Tar's lessons of obedience, as they always resulted in exquisite sensual pleasure, even to the point of overload. It was wonderful to see Tar and Nyssa strike a balance that would benefit their future together.

Ravyn Wilde did a fantastic job on a story with an amazing twist - a male-dominated society brings in an earth woman who refuses domination. Both characters learned quite a few lessons in Zylan Captive and it was a pleasure to read. I will keep my eye on Ms. Wilde's future releases, as I can't wait to see what she has in store next. For starters, I am eagerly looking forward to Selven Refuge, the story of Mica, the high priest, and Tala, Tar's sister. Selven Refuge is slated for release in December, to be followed by Zylan Rebellion.
