Lord Sebestyen Adrik is the called the Dark Lord by the local villagers. Once a year he sends a request to the village asking for a companion. Because of past mishaps, the villagers are all terrified of him and have long since refused to send their daughters to him, no matter what price he offers.

Katarina was an indentured servant working for a cruel couple. They treated her so badly that when the Dark Lord's request came she volunteered for the post. This throws Adrik for a loop, as all the other women were terrified of him. Why would this woman volunteer? Would she be the one to lift his curse?

Kelli A. Wilkins has a talent for the writing the intriguing short fantasy, I've enjoyed every one of her stories to date and The Dark Lord is no exception. I really enjoyed her story twist; it made me wonder how she would resolve it. I would recommend anything by Kelli A. Wilkins including this short.
