In this sensitive story by Zachary, a couple meet at a club and the sparks sizzle with a sharp zing. For Rei Davis, she's a cancer survivor of one year, but has received a phone call from her doctor - a call relaying concern and for Rei to go in for some testing. Meanwhile, as part of her survivor group, Rei's been keeping a journal of firsts. Having a one-night stand is one of her first "wishes". Chris (no last name at this point) is perfect. They go to a hotel and have mind-boggling sex. Chris wants more, Rei says good-bye.

Chris hopes Rei will give him a call, as he gave her a card with his number. Thanks to this smart move, Chris sees Rei again - but she leaves him like the first time. Rei has a busy job as a Commissioner for Juvenile Court, and has a heavy daily case load. Chris owns a successful dating service and is planning to open up at least a couple more centers.

Unfortunately for Chris, Rei has issues that keep them at a distance. Readers - women most certainly - will connect with Rei. The issue of Breast Cancer and remission is serious enough. However, the issue of cancer possibly reoccurring is just amazingly difficult to read, for personal reasons. I admire Mia Zachary for writing this with sensitivity and enough research to make it seem like it was really happening to Rei.

When Rei and Chris find their pace - what works for them, and face what has worked against them, it is beautiful to read. Along with that, the love scenes in this book are many for readers that enjoy passion while reading such a complicated romance. Mia Zachary is someone I think should be followed, as I feel her career is going to stay on the upswing if she keeps writing books like Afternoon Delight.
